Personality:
Mercedes had a rough past, her father died the year she was born, meaning her house was abolished. Her mother remarried Baron Bartels, and once her brother Emile was born, having a crest. This is what her stepfather wanted out of the marriage, and when she was 10, they left House Bartels and went to live in a church in Faerghus.

Mercedes, first off, is a very religious person. They took her in when she and her mother , so she grew up as a member of the church, and finds happiness and peace in prayer. A lot of the time, you can find her in the main part of the church in the monastery praying, especially after some of the bigger battles.

Part of this also ties into her passiveness, considering what people telling her what to do is the “Will of the Goddess”. Her choice to go to Garreg Mach at the beginning of the game and then joining the war later is one of the first times she chooses what she wants to do, not letting other people choose for her, as this choice went against what her adoptive father wanted her to do (get married and have kids like a good noble lady.)

Between what happened with House Bartels and her adoptive father wanting to basically marry her off to have crest children (it brings ‘prestige’ to families), Mercedes has a dislike of crests. Her first stepfather only wanted a child with a crest, causing her and her mother to leave home, and now her adoptive father sends her marriage proposals from men so she can have crest children. She and Sylvain end up bonding and sadly joking over ‘crest babies’ in one of their supports, because they have similar issues with crests. She bonds with Ingrid over marriage proposals, as her father sends her similar ones, although Ingrid wants to become a knight, not become a noble wife.

In general, she enjoys baking sweets, bonding with Ashe over baking through their supports. She likes needlework, cute things, painting, and flowers, along with reading… and a few ghost stories. She’s not a fan of spicy foods (see, loving sweets) or exercise. She can be scatterbrained and clumsy, according to her own words.

Mercedes is the older sister / motherly figure of the students. She is nice and comforting to the students, being like the one they can come to for help and comfort. She has a soft spot especially for people who remind her of Emile, her little brother, and even her little brother when she finds him later in the game. But, she is able to be mean and angry, chewing out Lorenz in their supports for his behavior around her and other women.

She blames herself for what happens to her brother, Emile during the war. (Spoiler warning, just in case) He ends up becoming the Death Knight and working for the Empire, seemingly having split personalities of her sweet brother and a murderous monster (Seen mostly in Crimson Flower run, when you recruit Mercedes). She blames herself, because she and her mother ended up leaving Bartels to run away to the church, and she was never able to go back for him. She thinks that leaving him in that house made him the ‘monster’ that he is. So, when he comes up, there a bit of a pang of guilt, and that’s why she takes care of her fellow students so much. (To a point Felix calls her out on it saying “I’m not your brother” in a snappy tone.)

Powers: Mercedes is a mage, and learns a variety of spells based in Reason (“Black Magic”) and Faith (“White Magic”). The majority of her reason spells are based in fire (and one thunder spell). And she also learns a lot of strong healing spells. She also has an inherent skill where if she heals another person, she can heal herself for the same amount of hp. She can only use each spell a few times, and it depends on the spell, before she has to rest to recover her magic.

Inventory: Rafail Gem: A Heroes Relic that works specifically with her crest. (From Wiki: Nullifies critical hits and bonus damage against its user. Grants Pavise and Aegis (Defense Buffs) to units with the Crest of Lamine when equipped.)
